Season 4 Episode 31: Michael Aspel Remembers… The War Game
TV presenter Michael Aspel looks back on one of the BBC’s most controversial programmes of the 1960s, The War Game. Directed by Peter Watkins, with Michael providing some of the film’s narration, this docu-drama explored what might happen if a nuclear bomb was dropped on Britain. It was pulled from transmission by the BBC’s then director general, who deemed it 'too horrifying' to be seen, leading Watkins to quit the BBC, claiming government interference was to blame. Despite winning an Oscar, the film was not shown on television until 20 years later, and here, Michael looks back on the programme, the controversy and his own small part in a key moment in TV history.
